Yesterday was #WorldEnvironmentDay. In Malawi, the majority of the country engages in subsistence farming, meaning that environmental considerations are crucial and can have a huge impact on day-to-day life. Naturally, many Rare Scholars are also passionate about these issues.
Chisomo recently presented his research paper assessing the incidence and severity of fall armyworm moth larvae on different varieties of maize, the main subsistence crop in the country. He described the presentation “as an important moment in his life.”
Rare Charity is excited to be assisting Chisomo and other scholars to access education that can directly benefit their lives and their communities.

Rare Scholar Faith studies the fascinating course of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practice, which examines what can be learned from different aspects of cultural heritage and how that can be applied today. On a recent field trip to Mua Mission, which hosts what is probably Malawi’s premier museum of local culture, Faith got to interact with traditional dancers and learn more about the meanings and themes of cultural dances, including respecting humanity and protecting the environment. Faith said the trip, which also included the chance to learn traditional pottery and visit ancient rock art, was “great for connecting theory to practice”.

Here's a different piece of positive news about Malawi: Did you know Malawian footballer Tabitha Chawinga has just become the first African player to win the Italian Serie A Women Golden Boot award, after scoring 23 goals in the 2022/23 season?
Inspirational and more evidence of Malawian women achieving great things.

Rare Scholar Fortune was overwhelmed when he was selected for a one year agriculture internship in Israel last year. Since then he has been relishing the experience while focusing on building his knowledge.

We are working to create transformative experiences for more talented scholars from tea communities.
We’re excited to be a part of the @specialityteaeurope International Tea Day event on 21st May, which aims to be the biggest ever online tea sipping experience, as well as raising valuable funds for Rare Scholars and women in tea.

We’re excited to introduce Rare Charity’s new Country Manager, Andrew Bita.
Andrew has extensive experience of working on access to education in Malawi, and is already bringing a fresh energy and making positive connections with Rare Scholars. We’re greatly looking forward to working together, and further strengthening the difference Rare Charity makes to our scholars and their communities.
Please join us in extending Andrew a very warm welcome.
Last week, two days before #WorldHealthDay, Rare Scholar Sylvia celebrated her graduation and the achievement of her Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy. In the future, she hopes to open a pharmacy and help other scholars to achieve their own goals. We congratulate her on her success and look forward to supporting more passionate and talented young people in future. #educationmatters #teachange
A double graduation is a Rare occurrence.
Congratulations Lisnet and Sylvia.
Malawi yesterday concluded 14 days of national mourning for the tragic impact of Tropical Cyclone Freddy. We have kept in close contact with our scholars and team, and thankfully they are all safe and well. However, being from affected areas, some sustained significant damage to their homes. We ensured everyone has a safe place to stay, and will continue to support them as they navigate this hugely difficult time.

Disrupted schools, colleges and universities have been restarting, and scholars have returned to their studies. While the effects of Freddy continue and will not be forgotten, we will help our current and future scholars to move forwards with hope, and to create a better future for themselves and their communities.
At least 50% of our tertiary scholarships are reserved for women. 100% of our secondary scholars are girls. Women around the world still face multiple challenges in continuing their #education. Rare Scholars get targeted and tailored support to overcome such challenges.

On #InternationalWomensDay we celebrate everyone taking action to provide opportunities for women and push for equality, today and throughout the year. #iwd2023 #teachange
Rare Scholar Chisomo recently returned to the tea gardens of Thyolo to support and learn more about small-holder farmers and their certification. This was part of an industrial attachment for the final year of his BSc in Agriculture, which he completed with guidance and support from @satemwa_tea_coffee. Afterwards, he reflected on learning a great deal about entrepreneurship, managerial and interpersonal skills, describing the experience as “exciting, enlightening, enriching, adventurous and unforgettable”.
Saturday marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It seems a great moment to celebrate Joyce, who is studying with real dedication to achieve her Biomedical Engineering degree.
Her ambition is to found a company which will provide reliable medical equipment for Malawi’s hospitals and healthcare facilities.
We’re excited to be supporting Joyce on her academic journey, and look forward to helping more women and girls from tea communities pursue their love for science in future.
